Community Service
Community service is long standing American tradition which takes many forms. In one’s younger years when earnings are often lower, community service takes the form of giving time and energy to worthy causes. In one’s elderly years energy and mobility can be diminished and contributions take the form of money. The options available are almost unlimited. Former President Jimmy Carter turned 95 years of age in October of this year but still spends many hours to be an active part of “Habitat for Humanity”. It was widely reported that shortly after a fall last month, he still made the effort to be part of a Habitat for Humanity home building project.
Many join service organizations in their home towns. Some find their place through clubs like the Lions Club, Kiwanis, Rotary or the American Legion. Even participating in the local clubs affiliated with political organizations is a form of community service, helping elect those who chose public office as a way to serve their community. Many who are members of the Democrats of Hemet-San Jacinto not only serve in our club but serve in other ways too. We are proud of our members who serve on the local School Board, volunteer at the Estudillo Mansion, help with the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, or are members of the American Legion Post 53.
In the spirit of community service our Democrats of Hemet-San Jacinto helps to sponsors the local “Gregg Figgins Memorial Scholarship that provides a college scholarship to a local high school senior each year. This year we funded two scholarships. We ask local students to submit an essay on a topic we select. This year the topic is based upon a quote from Walter Cronkite, “Freedom of the press is not just important to democracy, it is democracy.” Contact the Scholarship Chair at 951-929-1806 or write to The Gregg Figgins Memorial Scholarship at P.O Box 5136, Hemet, CA 92544 for an application containing all the rules and instructions. Funding of these scholarships is by donation and an annual fund raising golf tournament at the “Golden Era Golf Course” The golf outing is on Martin Luther King Day or January 20th, 2020. Golden Era is kind enough to provide the course at no fee so 100% of funds raised go directly toward the scholarship.
